Create an itinerary including Plaza Independencia
Encircled by busy roads and countless important buildings, Plaza Independencia acts as the nerve center of Montevideo. The square's centerpiece, a 30-ton bronze statue of Jose Artigas, the national hero who helped Uruguay achieve its independence, stands proudly in the middle of the expansive public space. Go below the statue to visit a mausoleum holding the revolutionary leader's remains. Put Plaza Independencia and other Montevideo attractions into our Montevideo vacation planner, and watch your holiday take shape.

  • Plaza Independencia is a very nice, open square connecting the old city with the newer area. With its wide open spaces, there is always something to watch...a street performer, a protest, a tour...

  • This is a beautiful plaza. We personally used this as a central point for downtown Montivideo. It is pleasant to sit and view your surrondings.

  • This was a quick stop on a tour and I would have loved to spend more time. If you can be there at 12 there is a changing of the garden for the mausoleum. We were lucky enough to be able to visit for the celebration ceremony and witnessed the full band and pageantry. If you are not there for the military, please still make the effort as the stunning architecture and beautifully maintained park and fountains really are worth the visit.
  • Montevideo old town is very unique with it's historical buildings. Also we were surprised about Uruguay's mate tea culture, it is cool and at the same time crazy how many people on the streets drinking mate tea and carrying thermoses, i think we saw maybe a 100 people in couple of hours....!!! Must visit.
