Located along the untamed west coast of the island of Kauai, Polihale State Park offers a wild natural environment and one of Hawaii's longest sand beaches. Explore the ecosystem that recalls Hawaii of the past, with rugged cliffs, crashing waves, and sand dunes as tall as 30.5 m (100 ft) above the sea. Wander along the 24 km (15 mi) beach. If you'd like to stay longer, campsites are available, along with restrooms and showers. Though the beach has a calm appearance, rip tides, steep drop-offs, and rough surf make swimming essentially impossible outside a small area. Also note that the 8 km (5 mi) road to the park is unpaved and rough. Heavy rains can make a visit impossible for many cars, so check the weather in advance. I thought the beach was by far the best as it was fine sand over a large width. The views were stunning especially the mountain with the cave. No idea why the road to reach the beach is in bad shape..... more

Tricky drive in sedan but with the right moves, you CAN do it - even with a Toyota Corolla. Park when you hit the sand unless you’ve got an SUV. Serene beach on weekdays. Less busy than other beaches. Intense waves In October. If your experienced in the waves jump in the water. If not, Sit back in the sand and enjoy a great view.

A beautiful park at the start of the Napali Coast! The road to the park is a rough 5 mile dirt road...full of potholes. I recommend a 4x4... or at least a taller vehicle....so you don't bottom out. They day we went was a very dry... We did make it with a Honda Civic...but not recommended in a small vehicle. ;). There are campsites available at the park...and would be a wonderful place to spend the night. I highly recommend this park...as the day we went at 1pm, there were only 4 other cars. Nice and peaceful. Nice covered areas with picnic tables.... just amazing!
