Iao Valley, Wailuku

Our family loves this park. There are really three facets to the main park, two paved walks and an unpaved hike. The first paved walk takes you up for a good view of the column. The second takes you down to a garden and ponds. The third facet is the unpaved path that leads you into the valley. For me, this is what takes this from a 3 star, to a 5 star. In this rain forest, you encounter all kinds of vegetation, water, and amazing views. If you learn about the history of this valley, you learn this is where one of the most crucial battles in Hawaiian history took place, where King Kamehameha got the upper advantage over the warriors of Maui, in order to unify Hawaii. To consider a battle in this terrain is mind blowing. They said the battle was so bad, the bodies dammed up the waters.

Amazingly beautiful valley with fascinating history. Parking is very limited, so be prepared to park on the road. Don't expect long hiking trails, but there are interesting places to explore along the rocky stream. The view from atop the stairs is well worth the walk. $5 per person entry plus $10 per car if you get one of the few slots in the lot. Credit card only!
