Create an itinerary including Old Fort Jackson
Through cannon and rifle firing demonstrations and tour guides dressed as Confederate soldiers, Savannah's rich history comes to life at Old Fort Jackson. Offering a view of the Savannah River, this National Historic Landmark is the oldest remaining brick fort in Georgia. Named after James Jackson, a British native who fought for American independence, the fort was constructed between 1808 and 1812 under the orders of President Thomas Jefferson. Deemed the best site from which to protect Savannah from attack by sea, the fort was used by local militias and U.S. troops in the War of 1812 and the Civil War. Be sure to peek inside the quarters where the soldiers stayed and make it to the rampart in time to see the cannon demonstration. For travelers who use our world travel planner, Savannah holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Old Fort Jackson and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • An unexpected and amazing time. The guide and soldier that hosted the tour was the best part. He was a younger gentleman and dawned what appeared to be an authentic uniform of the time period. He gave a very informative tour and history lesson of the fort and surrounding area. He interacted with the children of the group, allowed them to partake in certain aspects of the tour and had a great sense of humor. At the end we were allowed to witness a firing of the cannon inside the fort. The gentleman inside was also very kind and they gave us a discount due to a show being filmed on site. I would gladly pay the original price if it went to the guide. The young man giving the tour not once complained of the heat and the uniform he was wearing even though we all saw him suffering deep inside. I applaud their dedication and I hope the management pays him well. Outstanding job and experience overall.
  • Awesome experience to see. Definitely recommend going to see the firing of the rifle and cannons. Fair warning they are very loud in firing weapons just for heads up to all. The reenactments were great and well informative. The were friendly and answer many questions we had. The fort is in decent condition and though it is weather that also gives it's charm and feel of the past and what they had to endure back then without current technology. Over all Definitely recommend visiting it and watching the reenactment for sure. Maybe 1 advise is give a signal when the show will start letting all know like ringing a bell or something.
