James Henry Lane had a significant impact on Kansas history and is one of Constitution Hall’s more colorful characters. He was part of a large antislavery delegation that marched into Lecompton to protest the convening of the proslavery Lecompton Constitutional Convention in the fall of 1857. The nation’s eyes were fixed on this site, waiting to see what kind of constitution would be drafted and whether Kansas would join the Union as a free or slave state. At this National Historic Landmark you will learn more about Jim Lane, the proslavery and free-state forces in the area, and other stories of territorial Kansas. To visit Constitution Hall State Historic Site and other attractions in Lecompton, use our Lecompton attractions site.

We had a great tour, by a guide who was obviously passionate about his job. He offered cookies and coffee, and made us feel very welcome. Also, he had great recommendations for books, including one...

The building is amazing....especially when you consider how old it is. The information, pictures and history displayed are amazing. It is 1/2 block from the downtown. We ate lunch after touring Constitution Hall. The gentleman working was a wealth of knowledge. The merchants were super nice and lunch at the Cafe was incredible. Get the pie! So is the time to drive to LeCompton worth absolutely.

This is a excellent and welcoming museum to the history of the Kansas Territory and transitioning into statehood. The rustic and quaint feel of the museum adds to it's authenticity and further cements it as a must visit.
