Even the most adventurous hikers find the 18 km (11 mi) Kalalau Trail to be a challenge, a tremendously rewarding one. It has been noted as one of the most dangerous hikes in the United States--be sure to bring hiking poles with you. Average hikers need about two days to complete the trail. Expect steep drop-offs and a path as narrow as one foot. Don't cross streams if the water level is too high, and know that mudslides can be deadly. Plan to bring survival gear; water from the sources along the way must be purified to drink. You'll need to obtain a permit in order to camp at one of two designated sites. Don't let this place's beauty distract you from your own safety. To visit Kalalau Trail and other attractions in Haena, use our Haena online trip itinerary planner.

Incredible, but tough. The views are amazing. Be sure and make reservations and bring plenty of water and lunch. It feels like an accomplishment when you finish the hike. Done it twice, look forward..... more

We so need to hike this trail again! Breath taking views, tropical vegetation everywhere! We hiked in to see the 300 foot falls (8 miles round trip) and it took us 6 hours. We were also packing over a gallon of water each plus extra gear. I would say anyone in decent shape can hike the first 2 miles to see the remote beach, it is a bit more to do the falls so know your skill level and endurance! Absolutely beautiful there! At the 1 mile marker there is a small look out and we spotted a whale 🐋 😀

Only hiked to the beach and back. Would love to return one day and hike the whole thing. Hiked in March in the morning, and wow it was a workout just going to the beach. You feel the 1200+ feet of elevation gain over the 4 miles RT. It was not muddy when we did it, but if it has rained recently, the hike would be much more difficult and potentially dangerous. There are a few fantastic vistas along the way, but even just the trail itself with all the trees is amazing. I highly recommend, but pace yourself if you aren’t in shape!
