Reykjavik, the world's most northerly capital, effortlessly combines small-town charm with heaps of big city energy.
Step out of Reykjavik with an excursion to Thingvellir National Park in Thingvellir--about 46 minutes away. There's still lots to do: pause for some serene contemplation at Hallgrimskirkja, steep yourself in history at Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition, admire the masterpieces at National Museum of Iceland, and trot along with a tour on horseback.

Rome, Italy to Reykjavik is an approximately 9.5-hour flight. The time zone changes from Central European Standard Time (CET) to Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is usually a -1 hour difference. Traveling from Rome in January, things will get little chillier in Reykjavik: highs are around 3°C and lows about -1°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 22nd (Sat) to allow time to drive to Geysir.

Traveling by car from Reykjavik to Geysir takes 2 hours. Alternatively, you can take a bus. In January in Geysir, expect temperatures between 3°C during the day and -1°C at night. Cap off your sightseeing on the 24th (Mon) early enough to travel back home.
