A World Heritage Site, Belém Tower played an important role in Portuguese exploration during the Age of Discoveries. View the native beige-white limestone used in this Portuguese Late Gothic Manueline style. King John II commissioned a defense system to be built at the end of the 15th century. The tower was not built until later, under King Manuel I, and was finally completed in 1519. Though the tower has seen many changes and additions to its original structure, it is still most famous for its beautiful 15th century architecture. As you explore, you'll discover the historical value of this site, which served as a defense at the mouth of the Tagus river and as a prison to many over several centuries. With our custom trip planner, Lisbon attractions like Belém Tower can be center stage of your vacation plans, and you can find out about other attractions like it, unlike it, near it, and miles away.

Nice to head out of central Lisbon. Train down from metro station €1.50. We didn’t go in as many suggest not much is gained but worth going to have a look round at the beautiful architecture!

Such a beautiful tower. It's amazing how it's held up over the course of time and the stories it could tell. Beautiful day, not a lot of people. Nice that there is a large green space to relax and just take it in (not supposed to bring dogs, but some people do). Oh, and there is a bathroom near the road.

Closed so didn’t get to go up however it is a beautiful tower and located next to a equally beautiful war monument. Lots of nice photo opportunities. Toilets nearby and not far away from the main town. Don’t look at the photos on google, if you do...you won’t need to go! See for yourself. :)
