The city's medieval castle, Citadel stands at the highest point in the area and is one of the most structurally significant medieval monuments in Montenegro. Unlike most fortifications, this citadel stands entirely on its own. Within its walls also lie the ruins of Saint Mary's church and the fort's bastions. Climb up to get superb views of Budva's beaches, houses, and hills, and have a drink or a local dish at the restaurant on the terrace. Check out the gallery at the site, which showcases books and maps of the Balkan Peninsula. Put Citadel at the forefront of your travel plans using our Budva trip builder.

  • 100% worth the €3 (£2.50/$3:15) per person entry fee. Old world charm with stunning views across the Budva Riviera from the Citadel battlements and access to a truly can’t beat seen elsewhere...

  • I was a nice half an hour spent in the citadel. The sceneries from the walls are very nice they worth the entry fee.

  • Well maintained fortress. Over crowded and full of tourists. Beaches nearby and prices not bad. We didn’t find any restaurant with good views, though. Good place to visit as a tourist.
  • From the Citadela Fortress there is a wonderful view of the old town and the sea. There are well preserved ruins on the citadel and an open library (but books are locked behind glass doors, you can just see their spines). Entry costs 3.5 euros (only in cash) and is definitely worth the price.
