The black lava arch from which this peninsula takes its name, Dyrhólaey rises out of the North Atlantic. You can walk high on top of the arch at 120 m (394 ft), but if you prefer to avoid heights, there is also a bridge. Admire the panoramic views from the top of Dyrhólaey. Look north to see the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, east to see the black lava Reynisdrangar sea stacks, and west to see the endless coastline. If the weather is warm enough, you may spot puffins in the area, but keep your distance, as they are usually nesting at this time and protective in nature. Dyrholaey has limited road access during some times of the year; during this time more walking is required to see the attraction. Our Vik vacation builder app makes visiting Dyrhólaey and other Vik attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

There is a new road now so easy access from main road. 2 ways - drive up to lighthouse and for views or drive down for closer beach look. You can also walk it down quickly. We drove both. Up there...

Incredibly beautiful place with spectacular panoramic views!! The wind was very cold and strong so, we didn’t spend much time there but we’ll definitely come back in summer one day…😍

Dyrhólaey Door Hill offers an amazing 120 meter high view over the black beach to the northeast. The cliffs here are pretty scary. The waves have drilled a gate in the black lava rock which is big enough for small boats to drive through.

Probably an incredibly beautiful place. Unfortunately it has visiting hours from May through July or so. It’s not indicated anywhere except on the gate preventing you to drive into this area. I’ve planned to drive there for 2 hours early in a morning to experience this place with as few other tourists present as possible. I was by the gate at 6.00. The gate opens at 9.00. Be aware.
