Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition
Learn about the construction of buildings during the time of Vikings and the settlement of Iceland through thousand-year-old artifacts in Landnámssýningin/The Settlement Exhibition. Located in Reykjavik City Museum, the exhibit features archaeological finds excavated in Aðalstræti in 2001 which represent the oldest physical evidence of human habitation in the city. A wall fragment from before 871 CE and a longhouse from the 10th century are the focal point of the exhibit. Both are preserved in their original locations. Explore the exhibit to gain an understanding of how the first settlers lived. Follow the displays using an audio guide that's available in several different languages. A fascinating history of Iceland from the first settlers to today. Learned a lot and the museum was really well laid out - much bigger than it initially seems as it just keeps going through and up...

Fantastic experience. We were lucky enough to get there at 11AM today and join the guided tour delivered by an excellent local guide who was very knowledgeable on the history of Reykjavik. Presentation skills spot on and very engaging, one of the best tours I've been on. Throughout the tour of the museum we learnt much about the early Viking settlers and how Reykjavik became what it is today. The museum is an excavation of one of the first buildings built here and upstairs there is another building that is from slightly more modern times when Reykjavik was industrialised and started to import and export goods. Lots more to see in the museum as well as relics and stories from the Vikings in the area. Definitely recommend.

Nice, but a little small and short. It is interesting to get some background on how Iceland was settled in the old times, but even though we read everything, we came through there quite quickly.
