Cité de Carcassonne
Cité de Carcassonne, a fully restored, fortified French town dates back more than 2,000 years. This site is widely considered one of the best examples of a well-preserved medieval city with heavy fortifications. A classic fortress on a high peak features architectural influences from the Romans, fifth-century Visigoths, and later occupants. You can explore two rings of fortified walls with battlements, conical towers, bridges, stone streets, and medieval buildings. A famous Gothic cathedral with carved stone columns and stained glass windows crowns the city. A totally amazing place. As all shops and restaurants are currently closed, it is wonderfully devoid of crowds. You can walk all around the ramparts and then take your time looking at the buildings inside. It's an incredible fortress. There are outer walls, then more ramparts and then inside the walls there's the original chateau, a church and many restaurants and boutiques. Really quite stunning

My favourite city break. The city has lots of good places to eat, historic buildings, and quaint gift shops. Easy flight from UK around 2hrs. This region of South West France has a lot to offer. Lots of history, and beautiful countryside.
