Discover centuries of Costa Rican history at Museo Nacional De Costa Rica. Established in 1887, the museum sits within the Bellavista Fortress, the former army headquarters which saw Civil War battles, and where president Jose Figueres Ferrer abolished the military in 1949. Admire the historic structure and explore the museum inside, which boasts exhibits of the country's history ranging from pre-Columbian artifacts to displays about the colonial era and the independent nation. In addition to the historical and cultural exhibits, you can visit a butterfly garden inside the museum. • It’s interesting and you can learn about Costa Rica history, but if you only have a short amount of time in San José or Costa Rica, I’d say save your money and have a different experience. The people are very nice there, but everything we took away from the experience could be read in a book or online. The picture from outside is maybe the best part!
  • Detailed historical exhibits in Spanish and English. I would give 5 stars if there was more information about the building itself, particularly the jail cells. Definitely worth a visit.
