Designed to supply fresh water to the capital, El Dique San Roque Y El Embudo harnesses the waters of several rivers. When the original dam on this site, finished in 1886, proved a failure, engineers built a new one in 1944. Most of the original still remains, since efforts to blow it up were unsuccessful. The dam makes for an interesting view whether the water level in the reservoir is low or high. When the water rises, you can see it fall into the funnel and create a whirlpool effect. Low waters, on the other hand, give you a view of the top part of the original dam. Catamarans run on the reservoir and can take you to see the dam, though for safety reasons you cannot go too close. • There is no water... so there is nothing to see. The few cafés left are pitiful... 20 years ago this was a whole different place. Shame.
