President Lincoln's Cottage, Washington DC

Immerse yourself in American history at President Lincoln's Cottage, where Abraham Lincoln lived with his family at the height of the Civil War and where he drafted the Emancipation Proclamation. Admission is by guided tour only and includes five rooms of the Gothic revival-style building. The cottage itself is sparsely furnished, but information provided by docents about Lincoln's ideas, presidency, and private life makes it easy to imagine the iconic leader in these surroundings. Historical prints, photographs, and artifacts help to fill in the blanks. Advance ticket purchase is strongly recommended, especially if you plan to visit on a weekend. Photography is not permitted inside the cottage or visitor center. • OK. No furniture, but this place captures the spirit of the man and his ideas. The excellent docents don’t spoon feed you. Rather they engage you to draw you in. I see why some don’t like that but our...  more »

  • We had a great tour guide named, Asia. She really knew a lot and made the experience quite enjoyable. What I enjoyed from the cottage was that it is not about the furniture and having red ropes up so that people cant touch anything, its about having a discussion about Lincoln, slavery, his family their tragedy and how he lived and dealt with nation during the Civil War. It is a powerful and eye opening experience, you really get to understand who President Lincoln was and the legacy he left. Truly recommend.
  • Be prepared for the guard gate you will first encounter. The cottage is located on the grounds of an Armed Services retirement home so it's a full ID check to get in and the guard we encountered wasn't all that friendly. That being said it's a great little tour of a lesser known attraction. You will not get the deep historical information about the house and what each room was or how it was decorated like most other home tours and that's part of the tour knowledge you gain, but be prepared if that's what you're expecting.
