Tybee Island Light Station And Museum, Tybee Island

#1 of 50 in Museums in Georgia Coast
Lighthouse · Specialty Museum
On the site of one of the few remaining colonial lighthouses in the country today, Tybee Island Light Station And Museum provides the history of the structure and its human users through nearly three centuries of existence. Originally constructed in 1736 and modified over 250 years, the 44 m (144 ft) tall lighthouse changed hands multiple times in its lifetime, most recently falling under Confederate control during the American Civil War. You can explore the museum's exhibits, artifacts, and treasures from the lighthouse's history, which are housed in former gunpowder magazines in the surrounding military installation. Be aware that the 178 steps to the top of the tower pose a challenge. If you have mobility or health issues, they are best avoided. • A must do is to walk to the top. You can actually go outside. 176 steps up but landings to rest if needed. Great view. Museum is across the street. Leave your car at the light house or you will.....  more »
  • The view at the top of the lighthouse is worth the climb The museum was very interesting and a great deal we didn't know about the history.  more »
  • My friend who wintered in Tybee for years brought me here last year, and I liked it just from the outside. This year we bought tickets for entry to the lighthouse, lighthouse premises, and Tybee history museum across the street, all of which exceeded expectations in every respect. Great views all around, and outstanding historical perspectives and insights. The museum displays really put Tybee in historical perspective from the 1600s through today -- very well researched in the opinion of a former history major and retired teacher with a history master's degree. The docents and staff are great as well. May not be the best place for easily bored and excitable children, but a great place for those interested in local history and great views.
  • Great place to visit with awesome views. If you like maritime history this place is for you. We had a great time learning about the history of the lighthouse garland across the street. Best part is it’s right on the beach.
