Must see · Monument · Tourist Spot
Cabrillo National Monument commemorates the landing of Juan Rodríguez Cabrillo’s expedition to San Diego Bay in 1524. It was the first time that a European expedition set foot on what became the west coast of the United States. You can learn about the age of exploration and Cabrillo at the park’s visitor center. From here, it is a short walk to the Old Point Loma Lighthouse, restored to its 1880's appearance and now operating as a museum. The park also encompasses several former military installations, which you can see while exploring the area. Take time to appreciate the monument’s superb views of the harbor, city skyline, and Pacific Ocean. If it is a clear day, you might even see the Coronado Islands. • What a beautiful place. You could easily spend half a day here. The drive up to the information center and monument is through a naval base - there is also a huge cemetery on the way up in a beautiful location overlooking the ocean. So much to see and do at the monument. There is a small exhibit that is very informative. And the reenactment performers are really great. The lighthouse is wonderful to see and so cool that you can go into the house. The grounds are wonderfully kept as well.
  • Love coming here. I get the annual pass as it’s only the price of two visits. Keep an eye out for the tides and visit during low tide. The hiding trail is nice. Lots of great history and views and quiet. Fun to visit when the navy ships are arriving or leaving.
