The High Line, New York City

#2 of 18,572 in Parks in United States
A breath of fresh air in the middle of the big city, The High Line is a 1.6 km (1 mi) linear park. It's built on a short section of an abandoned elevated railway that once ran along the lower west side of Manhattan. Redesigned and planted as an aerial greenway, the first few sections of the park opened in 2009. The elevated park features gardens, birdhouses, benches, artwork, and cafes, and offers views of the city and the Hudson River. View the exhibit of mirror sculptures designed to reflect the surrounding greenery. An installation of 700 purple and gray glass panes, calibrated to match the center pixel of 700 digital pictures taken every minute on the Hudson, creates an extended portrait of the river. • Another trip to the High Line with an out-of-town guest. Everytime we go, there is something new to see. The actual High Line is a (5 Circle Rating). I put a (4) only because the crowds of people can ...  more »

  • This is an elevated walking lane that goes from The Standard Hotel to the Vessel (both ways). It's not on the street level (should be equivalent to a floor 1 - 2). There are no street intersections, actually it goes through many buildings, there are food and drink stalls. There are plants, little gardens and benches. The way it is illuminated and decorated is amazing!!! Usually you see people walking, working out, reading, etc. Definitely a great idea and a place you should visit.
  • Beautiful place! My friend and I went there for pictures and it was amazing. Really wish it was able to stay open for longer but I understand. We will definitely be coming back to do the second half of it. Should definitely be checked out at night and day.
