The historical home of James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, and his wife Dolley, James Madison's Montpelier served as the place where the president researched ideas that would become part of the U.S. Constitution. Tour the restored mansion where you can go inside the drawing room, dining room, and presidential library, filled with books and maps that reveal Madison's interests. See cryptology and writing duplicating machines, learn how to cook the foods made on the estate during Madison's time, and explore the extensive gardens. You can participate in hands-on activities in the restoration tent and archeology lab, and see scientists at work on the exposed excavation site. Kids have their own archeology lab they can work in and areas where they can play colonial kids' games. Be sure to see the introductory movie that highlights the history of the home. The former president is buried on site. Arrange to visit James Madison's Montpelier and other attractions in Montpelier Station using our Montpelier Station online travel planner.

Loved it! The tour guides are knowledgeable and engaging, and I learned things about the lives of enslaved people that I never knew. The grounds are beautiful, and one can roam freely all day, as well as hike on maintained trails in the old growth forest. I enjoyed the gift shop, and the cafe has a great lunch menu.
Beautiful grounds and fascinating historical home. Tour guides here are first rate. It's quite pricey, but they have added some excellent exhibits and restorations. There are lovely gardens as well. My only caveat is that no one ever addresses the hypocrisy of slave-owning champions of liberty. And unfortunately, I cannot recommend the Café for lunch. The barbecued "brisket" sandwich I ordered was so tough and stringy, it was literally barely edible.
