Are you a smart and socially conscious traveler looking for a meaningful and memorable visit to Miami's Little Havana neighborhood?

Are you an educator, civic leader or nonprofit looking for an experience that will expand knowledge and critical thinking skills in an engaging and exciting way?

My social impact tours of Little Havana (and field trips) offer private groups an unconventional take on this iconic "ethnic" neighborhood.

I am a Little Havana civic leader and the co-author of "A History of Little Havana," a "people's history" of Little Havana and the most comprehensive book about the neighborhood.

Since 2006, I have offered walking tours of the neighborhood. Currently, I teach at Florida International University but I also offer private and customized tours as well as field trips. I can customize tours and field trips to fit a variety of different topics: Little Havana history, Afro-Cuban culture and religion, Cuban music and dance, Latinx/Latin American history, etc.

As for my background, I am a social scientist, public historian and critical race scholar whose research delves into the history of Little Havana. For my dissertation, I examined how the production of Little Havana's "heritage district" helped shape local, national and transnational narratives about race, ethnicity and immigration.

For more than a decade, I've played an active role in Little Havana's civic and business organizations. I'm profiled in a PBS documentary based on my former blog about Little Havana and was interviewed for NPR's "All Things Considered" based on my activism to prevent the displacement of local residents. You can find my columns in our local newspaper, Calle Ocho News. I was even selected as one of 10 local "movers and shakers" of Little Havana by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

My extensive knowledge about Little Havana history and culture is also complemented by my study of Cuban history, religion, culture and politics. I was a Fellow at the Smithsonian's Latino Museum Studies Program and a Graduate Research Fellow at the University of Miami's Cuban Heritage Collection, the premier repository of materials on Cuba outside the island and the most comprehensive collection of Cuban exile history and the global Cuban diaspora.

On my walking tours of Little Havana, I also bring my firsthand knowledge about Cuba. I'm one of three Cuba tour leaders for Classic Journeys, rated #1 walking tour company in the world by Travel & Leisure.

Guests on my walking tours of Little Havana can rest assured that they will have access to accurate and insider information about both Little Havana and Cuba.

Moreover, you can also rest assured that I will NOT be reinforcing ethnic or racial stereotypes or disseminating popular myths about Little Havana. Instead, I help my guests understand how the myths of Little Havana were invented ... and why.
