  • Along the Tamiami Trail and a little further north along the "Alligator-Alley" are the providers of airboat tours. How should we decide? No question for me: Buffalo Tiger. Who buffalo tiger is or was? He was the 1st Miccusukee tribal chief who led the tribe to U.S. government recognition in 1962. Alone how he managed this is remarkable. Since there was no peace treaty between the Indians remaining in Florida (most of whom were deported to Oklahoma in the 19th century), the Miccosukees would have been denied a tribal foundation, as some later called themselves. In times of political turmoil, the leader of a part of the Indians who lived in the Everglades, Buffalo Tiger, turned to Fidel Castro in Cuba. Castro saw himself as a legitimate legal successor to the Spaniards in Florida. It was precisely this Castro, who had authorized the Soviets to station missiles in Cuba, that Buffalo Tiger asked for recognition of the tribe. Castro did not hesitate, and granted them. The U.S. government was "not amused" and also approved the official recognition. Since this happened without a peace treaty, "martial law" still exists practically today. Buffalo Tiger also led the tribe into the greatest possible economic independence. He used the special status of the taxation of Native American tribes, which was approved by the U.S. government. Not only gasoline and tobacco could be distributed cheaply by the Miccosukkes, but also the gambling without a profit limit paid off. The numerous pensioners from Miami swarmed into the bingo arcade on the corner of Tamiami Trail/Krome-Ave. After Billy Cypress succeeded Buffalo Tiger, the latter operated the airboat business for many years. Until he died as a legend four years ago. One can be divided as to the extent to which all these tourist attractions correspond to the Indian spirit. But without the clever business, the tribe would be significantly worse off today... And besides: on the airboat tours of Buffalo-Tiger you learn a little bit about the adventurous history of the origin of the Miccosukee Indian Tribe of Florida, which probably did not exist without Buffalo Tiger today. So no question who I'm joining!
