Enjoy views of the Pacific Ocean, an historical lighthouse, and a diverse bird sanctuary when you visit Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge. Gaze at residents such as red-footed boobies, tropicbirds, Laysan albatross, great frigatebirds, and nene, and try to spot humpback whales and Hawaiian monk seals in the ocean. To learn about the historical significance of the lighthouse, and the wildlife that resides on the refuge, read informative displays at the visitor center and speak to staff there. There is also a small museum and volunteer center where you can educate yourself further. I consider my trip to this place as a donation. I paid 10 bucks which go to wild life preservation. Other then that got walk maybe 500 m to see the ocean views and take pictures. The view of the lighthouse is much better from the distance (200-300 m before the refuge, from the parking lot). It's interesting to see the birds nesting on a cliff by the refuge and also flying above your head. There are guided tours (you'd need to check hours and days when the operate). I suppose with the guided tour the trip would pay off. There's a little house on the end of the path, where you can learn about history of the lighthouse and borrow binoculars. Also, nice souvenir shop is in there.
If you like bird watching or lighthouses this is the place for you, if your not into either you can skip it. There is an entrance fee of 10 per adult and kids 15 and younger are free. The fee goes to maintaining the park and bird sanctuary. The park is kept in great shape and the people working there were friendly and knowledgeable. There is plenty of parking by the entrance.
