York City Walls, York

#2 of 305 in Historic Sites in Yorkshire
Must see · Scenic Walking Area · Ruin
Experience York's ancient history by walking along the incredibly well-preserved York City Walls. The walls date back to Roman rule over 2,000 years ago. Walk their entire 3.2 km (2 mi) length if you can. Less than one-third of the 108 walled towns throughout Britain have even a single gateway remaining. These walls, though, retain four main and two minor gatehouses, all of which are still ornate and intact. Take the self-guided audio tour to hear about how the walls developed through the Roman era, the Dark Ages, and the Viking and medieval periods. Be careful in sections with steep drops and no protective barrier. Your ticket for the walls includes free admission to the Richard III Museum, where your tour starts and finishes. • Felt very safe whilst walking the walls, lots of space for people to pass, even some seats part way to have a rest. Different views of York. Easy to get on and off the walls if you have had enough.  more »
  • Walked round the wall on a Sunday Morning very interesting and lovely views. Unfortunately the shop was closed at the end of walk to receive certificate.  more »
  • Walking the city walls was such a simple yet enjoyable experience. My only complaint is that the small golden disks people suggest you follow are small, hard to find and often very far from one another. Aside from that walking the city walls is definitely something worth doing if you’re in town.
  • Lovely walk providing incredible views of York Minster and surrounding sites. The city wall full walk takes around 2 hours while passing through several bars (fortified gateways) including Monk Bar which contains the Richard III experience museum & gift shop.
