Portmeirion Village, Portmeirion

4.1
#2 of 86 in Historic Sites in North Wales
An "Italian" village on the coast of North Wales, Portmeirion Village is a fantasyland built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975. The village's playful architecture is painted bright colors and offset by thick, green foliage. Inside these buildings you'll find hotels, restaurants, boutiques, and everything else you'd expect from a Mediterranean holiday, including a nearby body of water. Get great views of the village from the central piazza and check out Battery Square for some laid-back souvenir shopping. What one awaits when you go to 'one of the 10 most beautiful villages of Wales'? Many things. But they don't begin to pay 12 pounds to enter. What is inside that deserve those 12 pounds? I don't know. In the end, Portmeirion is a miniature theme park. There is a tourist train that gives you a ride by the environment, several Mediterranean-style houses and a good view of the estuary. That's all. It is not a Welsh village. It is a particular vision of an architect. It was a huge disappointment for me.

  • A great place for a walk on a clear day - very unusual and interesting, with nooks and crannies to explore. Really cool architecture that is unlike anything else in the UK as far as I've so far seen! I'm sure last time I visited I got a free day pass for my parents (pension-age), but think that was also because we are in the local catchment. Also home to No 6 Festival held in September.
  • One of my all time favourite places, a great full day out for a family or a couple. Had the pleasure of staying overnight once, a small coach collects you from your cottage and takes you up through the village to the castle for your meal. Room was brilliant, village is beautiful with many walks and hidden treasures and the beach is at the bottom of the village.
  • I have been coming back to "The Village" for many years. The cottages are all so different and the views are unbelievable. The staff are friendly and helpful. If you stay in any of the cottages you will see even more unique features. Now there are even places for day visitors to buy food and drink other than the Castle or the Hotel. Ice cream is made and sold in the village.
  • At every turn you are rewarded with great picture postcard views. When taking pictures make sure that you are standing within the architecture rather than in front of it, otherwise it looks like you're standing in front of a large picture of an Italian fishing village rather than in North Wales. An essential pilgrimage for fans of "The Prisoner"
  • Great place. Good for pokemon hunting if your into that. Food is great and nice cafes doted around the place
