Portmeirion Village, Portmeirion

An "Italian" village on the coast of North Wales, Portmeirion Village is a fantasyland built by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis between 1925 and 1975. The village's playful architecture is painted bright colors and offset by thick, green foliage. Inside these buildings you'll find hotels, restaurants, boutiques, and everything else you'd expect from a Mediterranean holiday, including a nearby body of water. Get great views of the village from the central piazza and check out Battery Square for some laid-back souvenir shopping. • What one awaits when you go to 'one of the 10 most beautiful villages of Wales'? Many things. But they don't begin to pay 12 pounds to enter. What is inside that deserve those 12 pounds? I don't know. In the end, Portmeirion is a miniature theme park. There is a tourist train that gives you a ride by the environment, several Mediterranean-style houses and a good view of the estuary. That's all. It is not a Welsh village. It is a particular vision of an architect. It was a huge disappointment for me.

  • We really enjoyed our morning at Portmeirion. We did the free 20 minute tour guide, which was fascinating and well worth doing, followed by a bumpy free land train tour which stopped at a stunning look out point. We visited the shops, walked down to the lighthouse and added some money to a wishing tree. The ice-cream parlour is very tasty and it has a lovely interior too. We stopped for lunch as well but that wasn’t quite as nice, but it certainly did the job!
  • Very picturesque which is well maintained. Better to go when the weather's dry as there isn't much shelter. It's on a steep hill side by the coast so comfy strong shoes with good grips are a must. To get there by car you have to go on a single track road with speed humps which is difficult to pass on coming traffic.
  • Very interesting. Liked it very much. Lots of searing for achy legs. Went on train ride..very much to be desired...if you don't like a bumpy ride then this is not for you. we got there around 11am and had plenty of time to get round the whole place. If you can go on the coastle walk then you would need longer. Our day today was lovely sunshine and about 10 degrees. it was the best weather. We would recommend.
  • The wife really enjoyed visiting here, kids not so much! Quite steep in places. A short free road train is a nice way to spend a half hour (max) there are woodland walks too. Was v busy when we visited and restaurants get busy in the wet weather - we thought little expensive to but staff friendly and helpful. Nice afternoon out.
  • Definitely make sure you go on the guided tour. It's free and only takes twenty minutes. It's worth it just for the little bits of information they point out. Lots to see, especially if you do the forest and the coastal walks.
