Must see · Castle · Tourist Spot
Gifted to the National Trust in 1950 but still inhabited by the Strickland family, Sizergh Castle houses a 14th-century solar tower surrounded by a Tudor house. Admire the Elizabethan oak-paneled interiors, inlaid chamber, period furniture and centuries-old portraits. Explore the seven-hectare Dutch garden, which includes a pond, lake, a national collection of ferns and the largest limestone rock garden belonging to the National Trust. Try to spot a Hawfinch, an elusive bird best seen in winter and spring. View the night sky unobstructed by light pollution from Church Fell and browse the gift shop and plant sales before you go. Check for events online in advance. There is 142 mi (229 km) of parking. Put Sizergh Castle at the forefront of your travel plans using our Kendal visit site.

  • Wonderful old house/Castle. Great location and excellently placed for southern Lakes Barrow and nearby motorway. Lovely gardens. Good for young children. Owned by National Trust whose attendants are very friendly and a font of information. Well worth the visit and again and again
  • My wife and I were well impressed with the beautiful grounds, well stocked gardens and amazing variety of trees. Our tour of the house and its family history explained by the knowledge volunteers was most informative and interesting. A truly enjoyable experience well worth a visit.
