Experience 17th-century Edinburgh by touring The Real Mary King's Close. This collection of underground alleyways features buildings dating back to period of the Plague, and gives you a glimpse of Edinburgh life hundreds of years ago. Take a tour with a guide in period dress who will recount the close's history, share its associated ghost stories and myths, and bring you into a handful of homes left in their original condition. Named for Mary King, a famous local fabric trader and seamstress in the 1630s, the area was open to the sky before the city built over it and put it beneath street level. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes, because you'll be walking on cobblestone streets. Whilst in the city you have to experience this. It’s just hard to believe there is still houses and streets underneath the city. Book in advance and wear good shoes. more »
fascinating trip to see the conditions people lived in in the old town before the New Town was built. The fact that the last building was vacated only 120 years ago shows you how far we have come in.... more »
We got this tour guide, a heavy-set man from Yorkshire who may or may not have been wearing a wig, and seemed possibly drunk. It was easily the most entertaining and hilarious tour I've ever been on- the natural intrigue of the Close notwithstanding. Whoever is thinking about going on this tour, I don't know the best way to ensure that you get this hilarious gentleman, but I'm confident if you ask the tour people for the guy from Yorkshire with the amazing comedic timing they'll know who you're talking about. I've never rated a tour five stars before but good god, I'd do this again.
