Chatsworth House, Bakewell

4.2
At stately Chatsworth House, experience British royal life in the countryside. The historic 16th-century home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire sits on 405 hectares (1,000 acres) of manicured parkland in the heart of the scenic Peak District. Of the house's 126 rooms, you can visit 30. You'll see lavishly decorated interiors and many works and ancient artifacts that are part of a significant art collection from around the world. Watch animal demonstrations in the farmyard, such as cow-milking and chick-hatching, and wander around the sculptures, waterfalls, fountains, and hedgerow mazes in the 42.5 hectare (105 acre) garden. The house also hosts temporary exhibits, so check the program before visiting. • We could not have enjoyed our day at Catsworth more. The house and gardens are breathtaking! I hope to return again.  more »

  • Arrive early, we took the house and garden entry and booked in advance to avoid the parking fee. History of the estate is well preserved and respected. Each room a new delight. Garden is mostly rolling hills with many walking tracks for all levels of fitness. Take a picnic or there's plenty of dining options. Book a table for the restaurant in advance but the casual courtyard kiosks are fine. Farm shop about a mile away is worth a visit too.
  • Great place to visit with the family. I would advise taking towels as there are water features that the children can paddle in. Also taking a picnic may be a good idea as there are lots of open spaces to sit and enjoy your sandwiches plus the food can work out expensive for a family. Can easily spend the whole day here walking around the house and gardens.
  • One of my all-time favourite places. Chatsworth has everything you need for that perfect day out with the family. You can take a tour around the newly restored house, walk around the beautifully maintained gardens and grounds, visit the farmyard and playgrounds and then enjoy a lovely bite to eat in the cafe. I always try and stop off in the farm shop on the way home too as they have some mouth watering products available. I would highly recommend visiting the Chatsworth Estate if you haven't already. They have some fantastic events on here, one of my favourites is the Christmas Market. An amazing place where you can create lots of fantastic memories!
  • Lovely day out! Amazing gardens and house with amazing art and lots of different things to look at/do for all ages. Definitely takes up the whole day. All the staff were really nice and clearly very passionate. Didn't pay for a tour or audio guide around the house but in almost every room a member of staff gave interesting facts and info for free, they were all very knowledgeable.
  • Super place to visit. I'm not big on seeing old homes but they try very hard to make this interesting. The Christmas decorations were fantastic. The guide don't hover. They also worked to make it kid friendly. High quality gift shops, with many items made on the estate.
