For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs.
Relax by the water at Caracas Beach and Media Luna Beach. Visiting Balneario Sun Bay and Stand-Up Paddleboarding will get you outdoors. A seaside playground in the Caribbean, Rincon was a small agricultural and fishing town until it hosted the 1968 World Surfing Championship.
On the 19th (Fri), stop by Ocean State of Mind, view the masterpieces at Playa Oeste Gallery, then identify plant and animal life at Wildlife Areas, and finally enjoy the sand and surf at Crashboat Beach. Get ready for a full day of sightseeing on the next day: visit a coastal fixture at Faro de Punta Higuera and then kick back and relax at Sandy Beach.
