On the 24th (Tue), take a stroll through Asakusa, then take in the spiritual surroundings of Sensō-ji, then wander the streets of Ginza, and finally stroll through Odaiba Kaihin Koen (Odaiba Seaside Park). A spiritual center of Shintoism, Ise stands as a traditional city where visitors can see the roots of Japanese culture in a number of well-preserved natural and historic sites.
Discover out-of-the-way places like Ise Shrine Geku and Hinjitsukan. Oharai-machi and Takinomiya will appeal to history buffs. Get out of town with these interesting Ise side-trips: Shima (Goza Beach, Izawanomiya, & more), Uramuracho (in Toba) and Milkland (in Taiki-cho). There's still lots to do: take in the spiritual surroundings of Ise Grand Shrine, steep yourself in history at Aramatsurinomiya, and get engrossed in the history at Sengukan.

You can take a train from Tokyo to Ise in 4.5 hours. Other options are to drive; or do a combination of flight and train. When traveling from Tokyo in December, plan for slightly colder days in Ise, with highs around 11°C, while nights are somewhat warmer with lows around 9°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 29th (Sun) so you can go by car to Nachikatsura-cho.

Getting from Ise to Nachikatsura-cho by car takes about 2 hours. Other options: take a train. In December, plan for daily highs up to 14°C, and evening lows to 8°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 31st (Tue) so you can drive to Kyoto.

The national capital for over a thousand years, Kyoto retains much of the charm of old Japan, boasting numerous temples and shrines that seem completely untouched by the modern world.
Get some historical perspective at Kiyomizu-dera Temple and Nijo Castle. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Tofuku-ji Temple and Kaizu Osaki. Get out of town with these interesting Kyoto side-trips: Dotonbori (in Osaka), Hakodateyama Ski Park (in Takashima) and Nara (Nara Park & Todai-ji Temple). There's lots more to do: steep yourself in history at Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine, stop by Fuuka-Kimono, contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Kinkaku-ji, and explore the activities along Kamogawa River.

Getting from Kyoto to Kutchan-cho by combination of flight and train takes about 8 hours. Other options: do a combination of train and flight; or take a train. Expect cooler weather when traveling from Kyoto in January: highs in Kutchan-cho hover around -3°C, while lows dip to -6°C. Cap off your sightseeing on the 9th (Thu) early enough to travel back home.
