Called "Oporto" by many, the city of Porto along the Duoro River lent the country and Port wine their names. Portugal's second-largest metropolis dates back to the 4th century, representing both a rich cultural past and industrial present through its architecture and style.
Kick off your visit on the 1st (Thu): take in the spiritual surroundings of Bom Jesus do Monte. On your second day here, pause for some photo ops at Monumento aos Herois da Guerra Peninsular, take in the spiritual surroundings of Porto Cathedral (Se Catedral), take in the views from Ponte de Dom Luis I, then explore the historical opulence of Paco dos Duques de Braganca, then don't miss a visit to Centro Historico de Guimaraes, and finally step into the grandiose world of Guimaraes Castle.

Bologna, Italy to Porto is an approximately 6-hour flight. You can also do a combination of train and flight; or drive. The time zone changes from Central European Time to Western European Time, which is usually a -1 hour difference. Prepare for slightly colder weather when traveling from Bologna in August: high temperatures in Porto hover around 28°C and lows are around 17°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 2nd (Fri) early enough to travel to Funchal.

The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
On the 3rd (Sat), get interesting insight from Tours and then identify plant and animal life at Ponta de Sao Lourenco.
