As the political and cultural capital of China, Beijing stands at the heart of Chinese history, buzzing with the energy of its high population density and centuries of importance.
Visit Summer Palace (Yiheyuan) and Mutianyu Great Wall for their historical value. For shopping fun, head to 798 Art Zone or Nanluoguxiang. The adventure continues: explore the galleries of The Palace Museum, get engrossed in the history at Lama Temple (Yonghegong), take some stellar pictures from Jingshan Park (Jingshan Gongyuan), and admire the landmark architecture of Tiananmen Square (Tiananmen Guangchang).

With a nickname like the "Pearl of the Orient," it's not surprising Shanghai offers some of the most rewarding attractions and activities in the Far East.
Kick off your visit on the 9th (Fri): wander the streets of Former French Concession, then shop like a local with Nanjing Lu (Nanjing Road), then get to know the fascinating history of The Bund (Wai Tan), and finally view the masterpieces at Shanghai Propaganda Poster Art Centre. Keep things going the next day: get a taste of the local shopping with Three on the Bund, browse the different shops at South Bund Soft Spinning Material Market, then stop by Tian Zi Fang, and finally take a stroll through Xintiandi.

Fly from Beijing to Shanghai in 4.5 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of shuttle and flight; or drive. Plan for a bit warmer nights when traveling from Beijing in August since evenings lows in Shanghai dip to 30°C. Finish up your sightseeing early on the 10th (Sat) so you can travel to Sanya.

The climate and coastline bring visitors from far and wide on vacations to Sanya, with its 40 km (25 mi) of shoreline almost entirely devoted to tourism.
Start off your visit on the 11th (Sun): stroll around Luhuitou Park, kick back and relax at Yalong Bay, and then tour the pleasant surroundings at Egret Park. Keep things going the next day: witness a stunning natural landmark at Sanya Zhujiang Nantian Spa and then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Nanshan Temple.

You can fly from Shanghai to Sanya in 5.5 hours. Other options are to do a combination of train and flight; or do a combination of train and bus. In August, daily temperatures in Sanya can reach 37°C, while at night they dip to 28°C. Wrap up your sightseeing on the 12th (Mon) to allow time to travel to Lijiang.

The cultural capital of the Naxi people, one of the 55 minority ethnic groups in the country, Lijang traces its history back over 800 years, with the city developing from a trading post on the ancient Southern Silk Road.

Traveling by flight from Sanya to Lijiang takes 7 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of car and ferry; or take a train. While traveling from Sanya, expect cooler days and little chillier nights in Lijiang, ranging from highs of 23°C to lows of 22°C. Finish your sightseeing early on the 13th (Tue) to allow enough time to drive to Shangri-La County.
