The capital of the island of Madeira for more than 500 years, Funchal represents a laid-back city made popular by its historical sites and climate.
Kick off your visit on the 8th (Mon): enjoy the sand and surf at Praia de Garajau, pause for some serene contemplation at Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Monte, and then fulfill a lifelong dream with a swim-with-the-dolphins experience. On your second day here, steep yourself in history at Santa Clara Convent, examine the collection at Universo de Memorias Joao Carlos Abreu, examine the collection at Madeira Film Experience, then contemplate in the serene atmosphere at Igreja do Colegio Sao Joao Evangelista, then steep yourself in history at Colegio dos Jesuitas do Funchal, and finally take a stroll through Zona Velha.

You can do a combination of bus and flight from Furnas to Funchal in 7.5 hours. The time zone changes from Azores Time to Western European Time, which is usually a 1 hour difference. Along Portugal's southern Algarve region sits Albufeira, a city boasting 20 beaches for visitors to choose from.
Visit Armacao de Pera Beach and Tres Castelos Beach for some beach relaxation. Eschew the tourist crowds and head to Castelo de Mertola and Cerro da Vila. Venture out of the city with trips to Vau Beach (in Portimao), Igreja do Carmo (in Faro) and Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Anunciacao (in Mertola). The adventure continues: learn about winemaking at Quinta Do Frances Winery, pause for some serene contemplation at Sant'Ana Church, kick back and relax at Praia do Peneco, and look for all kinds of wild species at Lagoa dos Salgados.

Traveling by flight from Funchal to Albufeira takes 7 hours. Alternatively, you can do a combination of flight and train. Traveling from Funchal in July, you will find days in Albufeira are a bit warmer (34°C), and nights are about the same (23°C). Finish your sightseeing early on the 12th (Fri) to allow enough time to drive to Evora.
