Witness the delicately modeled beauty of the world's largest gold seated Buddha at Temple of the Golden Buddha (Wat Traimit). Many of Asia's golden statues were once covered in plaster and stucco to disguise them from invading armies during times of conflict. The discovery of this magnificent golden Buddha was accidental: a team of people moving the object dropped it, its plaster casing cracked, and the golden figure shone out after many years in hiding. Visit the established Bangkok temple complex to admire the Buddha's clear, crisp form and learn of its fascinating origins. Again the architecture here is brilliant. There is so much detail. Including in the walls as you are going up the stairs to the temple, a piece with an elephant statue protruding from the wall. And... more »
Paid 40฿ to visit the Golden Buddha statue, and another 20฿ for scarf to cover the knee (female only), a place of worship and nothing much except to view and admire the beautiful statue and temple. You can also donate 100฿ to one of the vendor located behind the statue and the monk will place a golden card with your name on it under the Golden Buddha statue for good luck and smooth sailing during their evening prayer. Would recommend if you're around the area!
This temple is a popular tourist attraction and home of the Golden Buddha, a 5.5 ton solid gold statue that was hidden under a plaster covering to hide its value for 200 years. I believe it is considered to be the largest known solid gold statue, of any kind, in the world. The structure that houses the statue is fairly new and has several floors. The lower floors house a museum and small educational theater. You must remove your shoes when entering the building, so bring a bag to carry them, because the entry and exit are in different parts of the building. There is a fee to enter the building, but I don't remember the amount. Located in the China Town district, it is a great point of interest, when in that area.
