Lecture at Webster University, Bangkok, April 2016 As part of an ongoing series of guest lectures organized by the Walker School of Business and Technology, on 26 April 2016, staff, students and administrators from Webster University’s Bangkok campus attended a presentation by Rock Around Asia. Considered to be the most eclectic and innovative place in Bangkok to buy, lease and commission original Asian inspired artwork – Rock Around Asia is a truly unique company. Interestingly, it is also one of the best places in Thailand to learn about, discover and connect with a new generation of Thai artists. This is evidenced through the development of a new online social platform, designed to promote Thai art around the world. With the world’s largest interactive database of emerging Thai artists, art enthusiasts are able to access artists’ biographies, videos, interviews and sample artwork. Rock Around Asia also has a wealth of knowledge about all types of Asian art, including metalwork, traditional masks, prints, earthenware and lithography. The company also offers a range of other services such as interior decorating, art photography and issuance of fine art certificates – part of the reason the company has become so successful. Rock Around Asia’s Founder and Managing Director, Mr Eric Monteil, was present and delivered the company’s presentation. He commenced his talk by outlining his somewhat unorthodox career pathway, moving from the field of physics to contemporary art. He continued his talk by outlining the initial vision for the company and the inspiration behind the company’s creation. Mr Monteil also recalled a number of fascinating and engaging stories from his memorable motorcycle journey across Southeast Asia and the artists he met along the way. His presentation came to an end with an overview of some of the main challenges and opportunities working in the art sector, especially in the fast-moving digital age. A question and answer session concluded the lecture, with a number of insightful questions asked by both faculty members and students alike.
