  • Visited last week with group of friends Barcelona. Do you really want to know something about the emergence of modernism and understand Barcelona better than this is an absolute must! Vicente is an enthusiastic art historian who makes Barcelona live. Through this tour we had again new connecting points to visit then nice things and buildings that we would never have visited otherwise.

  • Our Spanish upper neighbour Vincente de la Fuente is art historian and arranges hikes in Barcelona for a fee. He does that in fluent Dutch. So we are in the morning in the train with our guide Vincente on the way to the city. From the Arc de Triomphe station, under his direction, we take a three-hour walk through the original Barcelona. Without him we would not end up in this district and see the things he shows us. The development of modernism, Art Nouveau, in this city he makes us clear by countless examples in architecture. A number of architects are responsible for this, including the well-known Antoni Gaudi, but also Lluisa Montaner and Josep Cadafalch. He points us to the tiling at the bottom of the balconies, the hard stone penants around the window frames and the paintings, almost frescoes on the facades of the houses. He leads us past the Concertgebouw, which has grandeur with a grand entrance with spacious stairs and a foyer where one would be seen. Lots of stained glass windows and the oldest pharmacy in Barcelona with a beautiful window party and an original Jugendstil chandelier. In what is now an important shopping street, Vincente shows us in a clothing store the characteristics of what was once a house. Wooden ceilings and precious mosaic, which was more expensive than marble, on the floor. The new owners are obliged to save these authentic details. We end the instructive and entertaining walk at Casa Milà, the apartment building with the surprising façade of Gaudi where the tourist rows are thick to be allowed to enter with a ticket. For lunch, Vincente will take you to a quiet street with several restaurants and choose the best menu. In addition to the art Historical guide, he is also a culinary guide.
