Casa Vicens, Barcelona

On your way to visit the better known Park Güell, designed by Anroni Gaudí, take a detour to see Casa Vicens, one of his first notable works. This house, commissioned in the 1880s, joined much of Gaudi’s other work on the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2005. Walk around the asymmetrical exterior and note the Moorish influences evident in the colorful tiles, turrets, and buttresses. Look for the playful details that Gaudí included and admire the ornate sculptural work. Though the house is a private residence and not open to the public, if you're lucky enough to be in Barcelona on Saint Rita’s Day, (May 22) when the house is opened to “neighbors and citizens,” you might just get a peek inside. • The House has a fantastic architecture, but missed a narrative telling the story! There's no audio or video guide. So the visit ends up being a little empty of content! Pay €8 because it was a promotional week, but the normal ticket is around €14. Is really close to the metro and super easy to find.

  • Smaller Gaudi project, originatlly a summer house. Now unfortunately surrounded by ordinary 70s apartment buildings. Tours at certain times in different languages. Interesting video as well in the upp...  more »

  • It's a really good House. Shows the midernistic style of Gaudí in it's core beginning. The first layers are displays of what the house looked like before the renovations and the top layer is for the history of it. The staff and volunteers are really good and helpful. In general I think it's a good place to visit if you only gave one day in Barcelona, it represents all of it.
  • Little known, hidden gem of a mansion, the very first house that Gaudí built. In it, one can already discern the elements that would later define his characteristic style and will turn him to the artist he was to become. The house, set in a beautiful garden, is a celebration of earthen colors, motives of nature and Sub-Saharan influences. In the courtyard there is nice café and also a nice souvenir shop. Very helpful staff, speaking English and eager to point out to you the interesting details.
