Santa Maria del Pi is a 14th-century Gothic church in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. It is situated on the Plaça del Pi, in the Barri Gòtic district of the city.By using our Barcelona journey planner, you can arrange your visit to Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi and other attractions in Barcelona.
There are unsubstantiated claims that there was an early Christian church on the site in 413. However it is known that in 987 there existed a church outside the city walls and to the west of Barcelona. This was a small Romanesque church dedicated to the Blessed Lady of the Pine Tree (one of the titles of the Virgin Mary). The church was built between 1319 and 1391. The style of the church was Catalan Gothic, with a single nave almost devoid of ornamentation. However, in 1936 the church was gutted by a fire deliberately set by anarchists, who wanted to destroy the building. The church was restored following the end of the Civil War.
The front façade has a large rose window, which is a faithful 1940 reproduction of the original window, which was destroyed in the fire of 1936. Below is the Gothic arch of the main entrance.
The tympanum of the main entrance is divided by two small columns into three arched areas. In the central area is a statue of the Virgin and Child, and above this are placed the arms of the city and of the parish.
The side façade has prominent buttresses that support the weight of the arches and vault of the nave. Between each pair of buttresses is a lancet window. In the centre of this façade is the Door of Avemaria.

Basilica de Santa Maria del Pi Reviews
Una pena que los destrozos ocasionados por los anarquistas al inicio de la Guerra Civil nos impidan disfrutar del interior original así como del rosetón más grande de la época. No obstante, la visita ... more »A pity that the destructions caused by the anarchists at the start of the Civil War prevent us to enjoy the original interior as well as the largest of the time rose. However, the visit - very well organized, with ample explanations - well worth to appreciate the extent of forms of catalan Gothic.
A volte non importa una fede certa per apprezzare la spiritualità di un luogo. Leggo giudizi negativi , parole come "brutta" e "tetra" per una Basilica che presenta grandi spunti di arte e di bellezza... more »Sometimes it doesn't matter a faith that is certain to appreciate the spirituality of a place. I read bad reviews, words like "bad" and "tetra" for a church that presents great ideas of art and beauty. Sit back and enjoy the atmosphere.
If you're looking to skip the crowds but want to see a church, see this one. €9 will get you a guided tour that takes you all the way up the bell tower for an unparalleled view of the city. WARNING: this climb requires comfortable shoes as you will be going up tight stone stairwells to impressive heights. Recommend no skirts. The climb is not an easy one. Tour is roughly one hour in length. This church is more accessible and personal than the cathedral.
Was there about a year ago (early 2018) for a classical guitar concert in a side chapel, with perhaps only 150 others. Got to go through the main church in the evening on the way to the restroom (with an escort) and it was magnificent. So was the concert. A little known treasure - the Rick Steves tour guide didn't even mention it except that there was a concert there. Not to be missed
