Picos de Europa, Asturias

4.7
#7 of 36 in Nature in Asturias
Explore Picos de Europa, a mountain range considered one of the most beautiful in Europe. Go for a walk, cycle, or simply enjoy the scenic drive. Look to the skies for choughs, eagles, vultures, and the area’s diverse butterfly population. Visit some of the towns for bars, restaurants, and shops. Sample the area’s famous blue cheeses, such as queso de cabrales, which is traditionally matured in caves. Take a cable car at the town of Fuente Dé and ascend 1,800 m (5,906 ft) to discover spectacular views. If you want to explore some of the more remote areas of the range, be aware that brown bears and wolves are spotted here. For travelers who use our international travel planner, Asturias holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Picos de Europa and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • It's great if you plan to make a route through the peaks once you climb the cable car (which the feeling is very cool), because if you don't just walk a little walk and go back down. But you make up for them with the views.

  • We're regulars, we repeat every year. Without a doubt the best views of Spain. Landscape to see at least once in a lifetime.

  • Stunning mountains with the thrilling Cares Gorge walk.
  • Well worth a visit! Green hills, snowy mountain tops, tiny mountain roads, different on every side, ... Only thing that disapointed me was when I tried to visit the Covadonga lakes, it was outside of tourist season but still I had to park up 12km from the lakes and they make you buy a bus ticket to travel to the lakes, which I didn't do. In the north I drove up to the village of Sotres, through tiny goat-filled mountain roads. Lovely little village with alot of walking opportunities around. In the south I stopped at the Collado de Llesba viewing point. From here I started a 4 hour walk to the top of Pico Cariscao and back. Snow on the tops made it difficult, but possible. Best to use decent kompass and maps or a good GPS system as not to get lost.
