Isla de Vieques

Isla Nena

For sixty years until 2003, most of the Isla de Vieques was closed off to the public, with the US Navy using the island's beaches and surrounding waters for drills and testing of new military machinery, such as bombs. The irony of using the island in such a way is that Isla de Vieques remains largely unspoiled by industry and overdevelopment, giving it a modern reputation as an ecotourism destination of choice. The white sand beaches and clear blue waters have been neatly complemented by a sustainable tourist infrastructure in recent years, making exploration of the island as comfortable and easy as it is fascinating. The main towns possess a sleepy, old charm, and offer many sights of Spanish colonial architecture.
