The Gothic- and Moorish-styled chambers, cloisters, and hallways of Convent of Christ reflect the era of the Templars, Knights of the Order of Christ, and lavishly dressed royals. Meticulously crafted over the course of centuries (since the year 1160), the convent was adorned with extensive wall art, decorative windows, extravagant tiles, colorful gardens, and complex ornaments from top to bottom. Walk through its tall rooms and seemingly endless labyrinths of hallways, and view the Romanesque church, filled with Gothic paintings, gargoyles, and religious sculptures. Outside, explore the gardens filled with trees, flowers, arched passages, fountains, and tombs. Make your Tomar itinerary with Inspirock to find out what to see and where to go.

Eine richtige Tempelritterburg. Hier kann man sicher auch Kinder für eine Besichtigung begeistern. Mönchszellen, Speisesaal etc. Sehr eindrucksvoll! Und in der Nähe gibt es noch einen tollen Aquädukt ... more »A real Knight's Knights Templar castle. Here you can certainly inspire children to visit. Monk cells, dining room etc. Very impressive! And there is still a great aqueduct to visit nearby.
This was an amazing historical place ... from the Knights of Templar to royalty. Each section of this Convent had a story to tell ... the kitchen, dining area, how they heat their personal bedrooms, the septic systern to name a few. You can only imagine what a step back in time is like when you are in this incredible architectural historical marvel.
Absolutely stunning, if you love castles or historic places, this is a must when visiting Tomar. Be prepared for some steps and a lot of walking, especially outside the castle in the surrounding gardens. Plenty of toilets and a nice gift shop. There are are 2 cafés, one in the castle and one just outside by the parking.
