Stretching across the Tagus River, Vasco da Gama Bridge represents the longest bridge in Europe. Armando Rito designed this cable-style bridge to relieve traffic in Lisbon and transport visitors from other parts of Europe to Expo 98, which was held in Parque das Nacoes. Construction began in 1995 on the bridge--which is 17km (11 mi) long, much of which is above water, and contains six road lanes--and was completed by 1998. Drive across this bridge, named for famed explorer Vasco da Gama, or view its massive size from a park bench on either side of the river. • I drive over this bridge nearly every day. There is a beautiful and different view each time, in both directions driving 17 kilometres over water, feels like the ocean. Three lanes wide, smooth and modern. Very relaxing way to start and end a day. €2.80 toll going into Lisbon only. Have a nice ride!
  • Very photogenic bridge at sunset and sunrise. There are two good spots next to it with an amazing view.
