Trip Planner: Europe / Portugal / Alentejo / Evora District / Evora / Igreja e Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios
Igreja e Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios is best known for the richness of its gilded interior, standing in a stark contrast to its austere exterior, which reflects the rigidity of the religious order of Carmelites. Consecrated in the beginning of the 17th century, the church stands as an exquisite example of Baroque architecture. Notice the marble image of the Virgin on the main facade and the coat of arms of Teotonio de Braganca, the archbishop of Evora who founded the church. The outstanding set of gilded altar carvings is the work of the local artist Abreu do Obre. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Evora holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Igreja e Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Remedios and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.
The convent is located next to the cemetery, close to the walls, and I went there to see the core of the Megalithism of Interpretive Évora (an add-on to tour with the Mayoral Megalithica Guided Tours). The core area is small, admission is free, and can be seen in 20 minutes; the day I went by the convent was closed and, although it doesn't remind me of why, the truth is that the people who attended were impeccable. One of the employees, I believe his name was Salvador but I'm not sure, gave me brochures about the contents of the convent and made numerous suggestions of places to visit in Évora, was so helpful and nice that the visit to the core was immediately more enriched.
Il convento, fondato nel Seicento è una architettura piuttosto austera ma la chiesa ha al suo interno un bell’altare dorato. Dopo vari usi seguiti all’estinzione degli ordini religiosi, adesso ospita ... more »The convent, founded in the 17th century is a rather austere architecture but the Church has built a fine gilded altar. After various uses followed to extinction of the religious orders, now houses the city's Conservatory (holding concerts in the Church) and a show on the megalithic structures that exist in the area. I visited for this but it is worth a look independently.
The main chapel is decorated by opulent golden carving altar rocócó, of artists eborenses Manuel and Sebastião Abreu do Ó, completed in the second third of the century. XVIII. The pulpit was made by the same masters and is perhaps the most splendorous of the Alentejo.
A good place to pray.
