Monastery of Alcobaca, Alcobaca

4.6
The first Gothic building and the largest Gothic religious structure in Portugal, Monastery of Alcobaca presents royal rooms, tombs, a blue-tiled kitchen, and colossally high interior spaces. Formed in the 12th century and developed until the 18th century, the monastery was home to generations of monks and is the final resting place to many kings and queens, including Afonso II and Urraca of Castile, Afonso III and Beatrice of Castile, and King Pedro I and his mistress. See the insides of the monastery--rising over 20 m (65 ft)--and visit the 18th-century kitchen, which reveals the Cistercian monks' astonishing mastery of hydraulic engineering. You can take a guided tour at the site. • The monastery and very large and very beautiful and very central, easy to find when the city arrives. Hard to imagine how it was built so many years ago

  • Historic monastery, of exuberant construction, unmissable attraction, is worthwhile! The architecture prevails over the simplicity of the objects that decorate the monastery (almost non-existent), you wonder how it was possible such complexity and degree of difficulty in the execution of construction.

  • This is a magnificent place with a lot of interesting history. Still many sections to be restored though but worth the visit. Absolutely beautiful tiles and other gifts available to buy in the shops nearby.
  • The city center of Alcobaça it's one place that I like a lot. The square and the Monastery have a very good environment. Recommended city to tourism. Don't forget go to the pastry shop "Alcoa".
