Gatun Locks, Colon

4.7
Watch southbound ships raised 29.5 m (97 ft) from the Caribbean to Lago Gatun at Gatun Locks, a set of locks leading to the Panama Canal. Opened in 1914, the locks represented one of the finest engineered structures at the time, and the world's largest concrete construction until the building of the Hoover Dam in 1930. It takes around two hours to move the ships through the locks, so grab a seat at the viewing stand opposite the control tower to see the whole process unfold. • Transited the Panama Canal starting on the Atlantic side through the Gatun Locks. What a marvel of engineering - still operating pretty much as when it opened in 1914! Definately worth the trip.  more »

  • It's time ever going to the Panama canal. Absolutely beautiful. Wish I had known more about it before we saw it.
  • Very impressive! Definately a bucket list item to experience. It really is quite something to see the locks transport our cruise ship and these large tankers through the different water depths. I did not expect to be as impressed as I was!
