#1 of 12 in Trails in Wellington
Take a boat out to Matiu / Somes Island and experience the wealth of endemic plant and animal life in this sanctuary protected for scientific research and biodiversity. Thanks to the removal of rats and other non-native pests in the late 1980s, as well as strict cultivation methods that keep the island free from non-indigenous species, visitors can enjoy the site as a window into New Zealand's natural heritage. Among other rare and endangered species, the island provides a crucial home for the world's smallest penguin, the aptly named little penguin (known as korora in Maori). Explore the island's scenic routes while learning about its managed biodiversity and the importance of cultivation projects to the protection of New Zealand's environment. • Expect beautiful scenery as you approach Somes Island, especially on a fine, sunny day so bring along your photographic arsenal because you will enjoy capturing the many scenic facets of the Island and the surrounding ocean as you approach by ferry or boat. Don't forget the back view as you leave the shores of Wellington as that too is gorgeous. Then enjoy your hike, take more pics and then some, from higher ground. You won't be disappointed.
  • Fantastic place for a family outing. Starting with a boat ride to the island, then a talk on the pest free island, before walking on the well marked paths...there was such a lot to see and do. The views were breathtaking. Master five was not bored at all. I could have stayed a few more hours.
