Dyrholaey, Vik

#2 of 19 in Things to do in Vik
The black lava arch from which this peninsula takes its name, Dyrholaey rises out of the North Atlantic. You can walk high on top of the arch at 120 m (394 ft), but if you prefer to avoid heights, there is also a bridge. Admire the panoramic views from the top of Dyrhólaey. Look north to see the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, east to see the black lava Reynisdrangar sea stacks, and west to see the endless coastline. If the weather is warm enough, you may spot puffins in the area, but keep your distance, as they are usually nesting at this time and protective in nature. Dyrholaey has limited road access during some times of the year; during this time more walking is required to see the attraction. • Well worth a visit. Easier to get to if you hire a car as tge access road is a little challenging. The scenery is stunning. Really!  more »
  • This nature reserve on the rugged coast is a Mecca for bird enthusiasts. There are two roads, one to the top of the Hill and the other road to the coast, ample parking spaces. I was here while there was a huge storm, rain and high winds, but this obstructed the puffins. They just kept flying off and on a very pretty face. There are various paths and some parts are trimmed for security reasons, mainly due to the increase in tourism. In addition, this area is may and June some time closed to public to the breeding birds rest. The area is really closed, so it doesn't make sense to introduce.

  • Spectacular views across the black sand beaches with and the arch. The drive up is pretty steap and in January it was pretty cold with snow but still accessible.  more »

  • Awesome place! The upper viewing area is great to see the archway and the lower viewing area is awesome for seeing the puffins (they were right there next to the parking lot!). There's also a path that leads from one area to the other that was pretty cool and I could see some puffins sitting on the cliff top.
  • This is a cool experience. You need a 4x4 to get right up to the top. There are no birds in winter.
  • A really neat natural arch! There is a very nice viewing platform from which you can take pictures and enjoy the ocean breeze.
  • This wasn't an official stop on our day tour, but I am glad we did. There is a certain type of feeling when you realize your seeing in a place that you seen many times before elsewhere, like on television, or in my case, the login screen of my computer. :) Very cool.
  • Awesome place and toooo windy..itvcould blow off your hat or any light object...! Musr visit
