Dyrholaey, Vik

4.8
#2 of 13 in Things to do in Vik
The black lava arch from which this peninsula takes its name, Dyrholaey rises out of the North Atlantic. You can walk high on top of the arch at 120 m (394 ft), but if you prefer to avoid heights, there is also a bridge. Admire the panoramic views from the top of Dyrhólaey. Look north to see the Mýrdalsjökull glacier, east to see the black lava Reynisdrangar sea stacks, and west to see the endless coastline. If the weather is warm enough, you may spot puffins in the area, but keep your distance, as they are usually nesting at this time and protective in nature. Dyrholaey has limited road access during some times of the year; during this time more walking is required to see the attraction. Our Vik vacation builder app makes visiting Dyrholaey and other Vik attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • We stopped here on our way to Vik. There are nice views of the black sand beaches and rock formations. We also were able to see many puffins nesting in the cliffs and flying around. 15-30 minutes here...  more »
  • The weather was not too good, but still the view was great. Nice to walk around here as well. You could also go to the other end of the semi circle.  more »
  • It was very windy the day we visited but the views from the top (near the lighthouse) we amazing. The gravel road to get up to the top is tricky so drive slow and allow those coming by to pass.  more »
