Seljalandsfoss, South Region

4.8
Seljalandsfoss waterfall represents a dramatic single river that drops 60 m (200 ft) over a cave cliff. Situated between Selfoss and Skógafoss, this picturesque spot features a cave entrance that allows you to go behind the waterfall into the cave for a 360-degree view of the fall. Be prepared to get damp, as spray from the water often shoots into the cave. Treat yourself to a drink or pastry at the snack truck that is often nearby. Smaller waterfalls exist just a bit farther down the path, so if you're up for exploring, look for those as well. • Arriving on the site, a large parking (700kr) is at the foot of the fall. The site is composed of several falls, Seljalandsfoss is the most impressive and it is possible to climb via stairs and large stones to observe the fall housed in a hollow. On 19 March there was still some places frozen and gadouilleux so caution! I would still recommend good shoes because I got in basketball and I slipped a few times. A parka is also needed because out of this discovery a little wet, but well worth the peek! The descent is done across the fall through stones and stairs. The rest of the site is worth that you will walk: a view of a farm and to other small falls on the cascade of Gljufrabui.

  • Very beautiful waterfall. You can walk behind it on a trail. Great spot for a photo with waterfall in background for a perspective shot. Highly recommend. It can be crowded, but it's worth it.  more »

  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall along Iceland’s southern coast is fed by melting water from the famed glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull volcano. This powerful waterfall cascades into a pretty meadow but is best known for the walking path that runs behind the curtain of water where visitors can enjoy a truly unique viewpoint from this angle. It’s the only known waterfall in the world that it is possible to walk behind.
  • Beautiful waterfall and absolutely free. take care of your camera lens when taking pictures. water are blown by wind and fly to your lens. You dont want watermark on your photos do you? 🙂
  • Incredible waterfall. There is path leading behind it so you can take tons of pictures from any angle you want. I recommend to have waterproof jacket if you decide to go behind it as it is pretty wet in there. There are few smaller water falls that you can see if you take a stroll on a path just beside it. They aren't that far (within ~1.5km from parking lot). There are also facilities in case you need a stop while driving east. Parking price is 600 ISK
  • A fantastic waterfall. May not be the biggest but being able to go behind is really neat. Be aware that you will get soaked so wear a poncho.
  • The view is so pretty! It was the most amazing waterfall I’ve ever seen and you could even go behind the waterfall (although it was a little slippery).
