Volcano House, Reykjavik

3.8
#3 of 85 in Museums in Iceland
In Iceland, volcanoes and earthquakes are just another part of life, and a visit to Volcano House helps you understand what that's like. The museum includes a hands-on geology exhibit that provides some background information on Iceland's geological history and volcanoes, as well as impressive photos of volcanic eruptions. Feel pieces of pumice, ash, and lava taken from volcanoes in the country. The museum's theater shows two documentaries every hour. Watch actual footage of the eruptions of Eyjafjallajökull and Fimmvörðulháls in 2010, which resulted in thousands of cancelled airline flights worldwide. The other film details a 1973 eruption on the Westman Islands, which began with no warning and lasted for seven months. Volcano House is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Reykjavik Edition.

  • We wanted to go to a museum but didn't have enough time to do justice to one of the bigger ones, so we opted for Volcano house. The little area outside the theatre is packed with rocks that you can to...  more »
  • Beautiful museum that explains very well the history and volcanic activity of the island. Several versions in different languages are available.

  • Good stop especially with kids to show them what volcanoes are all about. Not too expensive. Hands on rock samples free of charge. Some souvenirs for sale which are cool.
  • I only visited the gift shop because I heard this was a good place to buy volcano salt. Don't make the same mistake I did! You can buy the black volcano salt at the grocery stores for a quarter of the price!
  • A fantastic resource for visitors to Iceland. The geological exhibits were entertaining and the gift selection was nice, but the assistance we received in planning our week of adventures was priceless. We had a great stay in Iceland, but the most memorable parts were those suggested by Daan, who helped us find tours and hotels. If we weren't eating fish & chips next door, we may have never stopped by and that would have been a mistake!
  • Excellent overview of volcanic activity in Iceland. Great for the family and kids.
  • A hands on exhibit where you can handle various volcanic rocks. The movie they provide is below average, the exhibit is above average. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
