Sun Voyager, Reykjavik

4.3
#3 of 314 in Things to do in Reykjavik
Wander down to the harbor to see Sun Voyager, a massive sculpture of a dreamboat. Designed by Jon Gunnar Arnason in 1990, the stainless steel artwork resembles a Viking ship and is dedicated to the sun. The sculpture is close to shore and offers a view of Mount Esja across the harbor. More art installations dot the shore if you continue to walk along the water, but this sculpture is the highlight. Take a look at our Reykjavik trip itinerary planner to schedule your visit to Sun Voyager and learn about what else to see and do during your holiday.

Nice to wander along here and get some nice photos with mountains in the background. Easy to walk to this from town centre or alternatively pull up in the car at one of the spaces nearby. Can be part ...  more »

This sculpture is very pretty, its architecture also. It's really something to see in Reykjavik. In addition, we have views of the Bay of the city! A must see!

Great place to go for a walk too. Nice views over towards Esja. If you go here for the sunset be aware that there will be lots of photographers trying to get "that shot" so you might get asked to not stand next to the monument! hahah! Enjoy it and watch as the sun goes down and catches the polished metal beautifully.

Writing this more for the shore walk than explicitly the sculpture, though it's evocative of the setting. Chilly April evening making our way to the Opera House with its light show among a few other pedestrians and roller skaters, we stopped here for the obligatory photo. Get out of the hotel or tour bus and let the wind give you a sense of the place. Recommended

An awesome sculpture. Set against the backdrop of Reykjavik Bay and the snow capped hills opposite. A great place for thoughts and reflection!

It has a beautiful view..within few minutes walk you can get to Harpa, or just keep walking along the shore. It used to be a port but now it is a touristic destination.

Fantastic spot, just close enough to Harpa and the downtown to be able to walk there and enjoying a bountiful view of the ocean, mountains, harbor, Harpa and other sites. The cost line just attracts you to walk further and you end up having one of the best stroll around there is.

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
