Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach, Reykjavik

#3 of 10 in Beaches in Iceland
Sit in the sun, swim, sail, or just unwind after a busy day at Nautholsvik Geothermal Beach. This beach on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean houses an artificial lagoon with large sea walls, where cold seawater and hot geothermal water combine. Try cold-water swimming, which is an Icelandic tradition that goes back to the age of settlement--but beware of hypothermia. The beach features a hot pot, steam bath, snack bar serving hot drinks and chocolate, and kids' playground. Amenities include changing rooms, toilets, showers, and towels and swimsuits you can rent. Dogs, bicycles, and any kind of vehicle traffic are not allowed on the beach. • This artificial Beach has a heated and has a thermal pool a few metres away. Need to pay ISK 600 to enter this pool or on the beach, as I didn't have the heart to enter, not charged anything. It was funny to see the guys going from the beach to the pool quietly while I was shivering with a pile of clothes lol. Is closed Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday and opens in a few hours on other days.

  • We went in November and it was great to go from the hot pool cold super sea! Running on the snow... very clean and equipped locker rooms. Advisable to wear flip flops or crocks to not burn your feet in the snow

  • Interesting man-made beach. Ok to visit if you have the time. But unless you're there for the free geothermal baths, not a lot to really see. There are two hot water areas -- a long hot tub in front o...  more »

  • Beautiful little find in Reykjavik it's far out from downtown (40minute walk) but the beach is clean he hot spot is clean and all the facilities are clean. It's free all summer June 15 - August 15 and after those dates it's only 600ISK. Very local scene, a lot of cold water swimmers.
  • Great experience. Free in the summer. Very pretty - very local. Towels rented for 600 kr. Several areas to swim/sit at different temperatures. Hot water pumped into man made lagoon in the ocean. Changing room with showers. No lockers.
  • What a great beach to visit! Comes with a huge hot tub and tip top changing rooms and showers! Must see!
  • Cool location for swimming. Closed for Easter holiday April 14 - May 1 2017. Still a nice place to see the "beach". Excellent walking/biking path in the area.
  • Coolest bath expierence I had in iceland! Hot pot next to a sandy beach with such a beautiful view!

Where to stay in Reykjavik

In this highly walkable capital, many of Reykjavik's hotels and guesthouses offer close proximity to the city's popular attractions, bars, and restaurants. The waterfront offers an exciting dose of activity. Although Reykjavik provides plenty of accommodations to its flocks of visitors, there is a dearth of budget options in the city. Price-conscious visitors should consider staying in a hostel, with both private and dorm rooms available, or a nearby campsite. Although the campground is not as centrally located as some hotels, guests are better positioned to take advantage of the natural surroundings.
